AC Died on the Hottest Day? What to Do Before the Tech Arrives

Your AC quits in the middle of a Northern Virginia heat wave, and the house is climbing past 80 degrees. Before you panic, there are a few safe things you can check that sometimes get the system running again, plus simple steps to stay cool and safe while you wait for a technician. Here is exactly what to do.

First, is this an emergency?

For most healthy adults, a few hours without AC is uncomfortable but not dangerous. It becomes urgent when there are infants, older adults, anyone with a heart or respiratory condition, or pets in the home, or when indoor temperatures climb into the 90s. If someone is showing signs of heat illness (dizziness, nausea, confusion, or a rapid pulse), get them somewhere cool and call for help right away. Otherwise, work through the quick checks below.

Four quick things to check

1. The thermostat. Confirm it is set to Cool, the target is below room temperature, and the fan is on Auto. Replace the batteries if the screen is dim.

2. The breaker. A central AC has a breaker for the indoor unit and one for the outdoor unit. Check your panel for a tripped breaker and reset it once. If it trips again immediately, stop and call, because that points to an electrical fault.

3. The air filter. A filter packed with dust can choke airflow enough to shut cooling down or freeze the coil. If it is gray and clogged, swap it.

How to stay cool while you wait

If the checks do not fix it, keep everyone comfortable: close blinds and curtains on the sunny side of the house, run fans to move air (a fan blowing across a bowl of ice helps), drink plenty of water, and move to the lowest level of the home where it is coolest. Avoid using the oven. If it is truly dangerous inside, a public library, mall, or cooling center is a good place to wait it out.
