If your AC is running but the house will not cool down, the cause is usually one of seven things: a thermostat setting, a clogged air filter, a tripped breaker, a frozen evaporator coil, low refrigerant from a leak, a dirty outdoor unit, or a failing capacitor or compressor. The first three you can often check yourself in a few minutes. The rest need a licensed technician. Here is how to tell which one you are dealing with.
1. Thermostat settings
Start with the simplest fix. Make sure the thermostat is set to Cool, the temperature is set below the current room temperature, and the fan is on Auto rather than On. Fan set to On runs the blower constantly, so air keeps blowing even when it is not being cooled, which feels like the AC is not working. Replace the thermostat batteries if it is dim or unresponsive.
What to do: Adjust the settings and wait 15 minutes. If nothing changes, move on.
2. A clogged air filter
This is one of the most common and most overlooked causes. A dirty filter chokes airflow, which weakens cooling and can eventually freeze the coil. If you cannot remember the last time you changed it, that is likely part of the problem.
What to do: Check the filter. If it is gray and packed with dust, replace it. Most homes need a fresh filter every 1 to 3 months.
3. A tripped breaker or lost power
A central AC has two power connections, the indoor air handler and the outdoor unit. If the outdoor unit has lost power at the breaker, the indoor fan can still blow room-temperature air while nothing is actually being cooled.
What to do: Check your electrical panel for a tripped breaker and reset it once. If it trips again immediately, stop and call a technician, because repeated tripping points to an electrical fault that needs attention.
4. A frozen evaporator coil
If you see ice on the indoor unit or the refrigerant lines, the evaporator coil has frozen. This is usually caused by restricted airflow (a dirty filter or blocked vents) or low refrigerant. A frozen coil cannot absorb heat, so the air coming out is not cold.
What to do: Turn the system off and let the ice melt fully, which can take a few hours. Replace the filter and make sure vents are open. If it freezes again, the cause is deeper and needs a pro.
5. Low refrigerant from a leak
Refrigerant is what actually removes heat from your home. If it is low, the system runs constantly but never quite cools. Refrigerant does not get used up in normal operation, so low levels almost always mean a leak somewhere in the system.
What to do: This is not a DIY fix. Refrigerant handling requires EPA certification, and simply topping it off without repairing the leak wastes money. Call a licensed technician to find the leak, repair it, and recharge correctly.
6. A dirty condenser coil or blocked outdoor unit
The outdoor unit releases the heat your AC pulls from inside. If its coil is caked with dirt or it is choked by grass clippings, leaves, or shrubs, it cannot dump that heat, and cooling drops off.
What to do: Turn the unit off, clear at least two feet of space around it, and gently rinse the exterior fins with a hose. If performance does not recover, the coil likely needs a professional cleaning.
7. A failing capacitor or compressor
The capacitor gives the compressor and fan motors the jolt they need to start. When it weakens, the system may hum, struggle to start, or run without cooling. The compressor itself is the heart of the system, and when it fails, the AC cannot cool at all. You might hear unusual clicking, buzzing, or loud noises.
What to do: Both are technician repairs. A capacitor is an inexpensive, common fix. A compressor is the most expensive repair and, on an older system, often the moment to consider replacement.
When to call a professional
Work through the first three checks yourself. If your AC still is not cooling after that, or you spot ice, hear odd noises, smell something burning, or the breaker keeps tripping, it is time to call. Refrigerant and electrical issues are not safe or legal to handle without certification, and a quick diagnosis now prevents a small problem from taking out the compressor.
