A central air conditioner in Virginia typically lasts 12 to 17 years, and a well-maintained system can reach 20 years. Heat pumps, which run year-round here for both heating and cooling, tend to land on the shorter end, around 10 to 15 years, because they work in every season instead of just summer.

Lifespan is not fixed, though. Two identical units installed on the same street can be five or more years apart in how long they last, and the difference almost always comes down to maintenance, install quality, and how hard the system is worked. Here is what shortens or extends an AC's life in our climate, and how to tell when yours is near the end.

What affects how long your AC lasts

Maintenance. This is the single biggest factor you control. A system that gets an annual tune-up, clean coils, and regular filter changes runs cooler, draws less strain, and lasts years longer than one that is ignored until it breaks.

Virginia's humidity and heat. Northern Virginia summers are hot and muggy, which means your AC works hard for months. Humidity also accelerates corrosion on coils and components, so coastal and high-moisture conditions tend to age systems faster than dry climates.

Install quality. A unit that was the wrong size for the home, charged incorrectly, or installed with leaky or poorly sized ductwork will struggle and wear out early. Proper sizing and a clean install matter more than most homeowners realize.

Run time and usage. A system cooling a large, poorly insulated home runs longer cycles and logs more hours than one in a tight, well-insulated house. Heat pumps that handle both heating and cooling simply accumulate more run time.

Filter neglect. A clogged filter chokes airflow, freezes coils, and forces the system to work harder. It is the cheapest thing to fix and one of the most common causes of premature failure.

Signs your AC is near the end of its life

If several of these sound familiar, it is worth weighing a replacement rather than another repair. Our guide on whether to repair or replace your HVAC walks through the math, including the $5,000 rule.

Maintenance is cheaper than a new system

A new central AC in Northern Virginia runs $3,000 to $7,500 for a standard unit and more for high-efficiency systems. Annual maintenance costs a small fraction of that and routinely adds years to a system's life while keeping it efficient. It also protects most manufacturer warranties, which often require documented professional maintenance to stay valid. Skipping tune-ups to save a little now is one of the most expensive habits a homeowner can have.
